Teruel
is the province that has been affected the most by depopulation.
Its severe climate and rough and rugged territory result in fields
with scarce agricultural yields. It is a place with a tradition
for agriculture and mining, where the economic and industrial restructuring
has had a severe effect. Even so, the energy production is still
the main and almost only industry of the province.
At the moment quality agriculture is trying to be recovered by
promoting the elaboration of select foods, aided by initiative
like the label C of Quality, or the Certificate of Origin. The
Olive Oil of the Low Aragón, the Peach of Calanda and particularly
the Ham of Teruel are the top products of the place.
The Iberian mountains, in the south are however an important tourist
resource. Thanks to the houses for "rural tourism" and the attraction
of skiing (in the stations of Valdelinares and Javalambre) an
area of great beauty and natural interest is beginning to be exploited,
following the example of the Pyrenees.
The
city of Teruel has a population of about 30.000 inhabitants. It
is the administrative center of the district. The UNESCO declared
it to be Artistic Heritage of Humanity due to its impressive group
of Mudejar (Moorish) monuments, made of brick and ceramic tiles
in intricate geometric games. This art combines the Islamic inheritance
with Christian architecture. The cathedral and San Martin's tower
are also a must for visitors.
Alcañiz
is the capital of the so-called Low Aragon, a county where during
Holy Weeka the drums and drummers that film director Luis Buñuel
popularized in his movies resound. The towns of Albalate of the
Archbishop, Alcañiz, Alcorisa, Andorra, Calanda, Híjar, the Puebla
of Híjar, Samper of Calanda and Urrea de Gaén are part of the
"Route of the Drum".
Albarracín
is located at the foot of the Iberian mountains and it centralizes
the increasingly important tourism of the area. Their paved floors
and mud brick houses offer all the flavour of a medieval city,
giving you the feeling that time has stopped in its streets. The
town of Mora de Rubielos also contains a castle and a collegiate
church with medieval surroundings in very good condition.
In
the Eastern border lies the Maestrazgo, a mountainous and rough
area that was the last haven for the Carlist rebelds in the succession
wars of last century. The visitor can enjoy the charm of the streets
of Valderrobres, crowned by its stronghold-church of Calaceite,
with its museum Juan Cabré, and to immerse yourself in a voyage
in the time visiting places like Mirambel, small town declared
humanity's heritage by UNESCO.
